Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: would I purchase an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and models available, it can be overwhelming for clients to decide between those technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors provide better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will explain why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing an equal grade of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your room on your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. And that is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel functions like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector is turned on to when the content reaches your screen is extremely significant to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to send the projector image. A point to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your wall simultaneously. The way a DLP projector operates is widely different and even the way an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of creating an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then pull together each coloured element of the image into the single whole image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the best brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have placed a white segment in the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this goes and degrades colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is able to produce. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications in comparison to most LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is used. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to bring to life has moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this downside because all the colours are processed at the same time. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up artifacts, but the price of these projectors make them not practical for many businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and recall how different colours of light refract different amounts when passing through the same lens. The problem with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in different ways. Often with a DLP projector, an extra yellow colour will show above and an extra blue will come up below something as simple as a lone black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to take away these effects on the projected image, as each colour is directed on isolated LCD panels.

The only real buy point (excluding price) with deciding on a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant to transport and must be traded off against the image advantages of LCD projectors. If the outcome of the picture quality is important to you, then the choice is easy. Go for an LCD projector! LCD projectors will consistently produce bright, colourful images with fewer image imperfections. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht had been a pleasure craft used initially by royalty and later by the burghers on the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, coming out of private challenges. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 punt. Yachting rose as fashionable among the rich and aristocracy, but after that point the trend did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, with great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when joining with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some stipulated method on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to monarchy in 1820, it came to be named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continued location of British yachting. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the ascension of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for great stakes were held, and the club life was wonderful. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English took dominance. Sailing was for the most part for pleasure and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and created a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts took the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the later half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was initially heavily affected by the victory of America, which was created by George Steers for a club started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and built in today’s sense, with merely a model being used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what science had already done for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats had to be individually manufactured, there was a desire for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were built. Hence, a rating rule came into being, which is found in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. In the present day, one of the rapidly growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to single specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing these boats can be held on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting belonged primarily for the royal and the rich, cost was no object, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The rise and popularity of smaller yachts happened in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the seaworthiness of less sizeable boats. Following this in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more popular, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, at which point steam began to take the place of sail power in market boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in pleasure boats. Bigger power yachts were developed to a high element, and long-distance cruising turned into a preferred pastime of the rich. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht archetype for many years. By the later half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were exclusively power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of bigger steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.

As bigger and better quality internal-combustion engines were produced, many large boats began using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. In the decade that followed, large power-yacht creation blossomed, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that time the biggest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of big power craft declined from 1932, and the style after that was for smaller, less pricey yachts. After World War II, lots of small naval boats were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting has become a widespread popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally owning and keeping their own small leisure craft. The amount of boats and sailors is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be differentiated by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that applies the same relative onus on all taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income move in the same levels. A progressive tax is recognisable by a higher than proportional growth in the tax onus relative to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional increase in the relative liability. So, progressive taxes are seen as fighting inequity in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes can have the result of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, can become less so for the upper-income categories—especially if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding some certain income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income groups could also be more progressive if personal exemptions are made.

Income measured over the course of a given period may not necessarily provide the most suitable measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory rises in income may be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might select to provide for consumption by decreasing savings. Ergo, if taxation is compared along with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than when compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (excepting those on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the share of own income consumed or spent on specific goods lowers as the rate of personal income increases. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is difficult to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden is dependant fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being determined.

In considering the economic effects of taxation, it is essential to differentiate between varied points of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those specified in the law; generally these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Thus, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates need to review provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, since it may be dependant on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates commonly rise with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and also due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households may dwarf these effects, forcing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that lower as income increases.
